小滝 | OTAKI : Japanese (Romanji) for (n) cascade. (Pronounced: OHH-tuckhee.)
The twisted stocking stitch patterns reminiscent of gentle water cascading,
rippling in a mountain stream.
This hat melds ribbed edge band with textured slouch to soften the silhouette;
it provides modern styling with an elegant edge.
Two variations of the design are included in the pattern;
a modern assymmetric rib banded hat using short-row shaping to the nape (Model A)
and another version with a standard rib band (Model B).

LOVING the twisted stocking stitch (AKA cascading rippling stream water) bizzo. ‘Tis a beauty K. And you’re right. Tam does wonderful things with a lens – but she’s also working with ‘good bones’!

What a great pattern. I’m about to embark on my second knitting project ever after finishing a tunic vest for my son. A winter hat that suits short hair is next on my list. If it’s not too tricky of course!
I was drawn to the name of this – Otaki is a Maori word too, the name of a wee town in Aotearoa, New Zealand. The name is said to mean “the place of a staff stuck in the ground”. A wee tangent: I stopped for dinner there last night on my drive home to Wellington….at a wee caravan selling Nepalese food, cooked by a Nepalese guy with 2 young Maori girls working for him who were speaking fluent Maori. So unusual and so cool to hear!
Janet
Twisted stitch and short rows. This looks great and would introduce some to the above techniques.
